Ghana will implement performance targets for all ambassadors and diplomats, requiring them to deliver measurable results that promote investment and create jobs abroad, effective September 1, 2025.

This initiative was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum held in Yokohama, Japan, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, according to graphic.com.gh.

Ablakwa institutes 6 new policy interventions at Ghanaian embassies to tackle misconduct

The event took place alongside the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9).

According to Ablakwa, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that Ghana’s diplomatic efforts move beyond ceremonial protocol to focus on economic impact.

“For the first time in our history, on the 1st of September, the president will be launching the first of its kind, a novel KPI, Key Performance Indicators, for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana. When you peruse that document, you will see that economic diplomacy is at the heart of it,” he stated.

He explained that the new targets will require diplomats to account for their contributions to attracting investment, facilitating trade, and maintaining investor confidence.

Their performance will be directly tied to tangible outcomes that benefit the Ghanaian economy.

“The president wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvement in the lives of the people. Diplomacy must promote investment, and diplomacy must create a safe haven for all of those who invest in our country, and that is what the Foreign Ministry has been charged to do,” Ablakwa said.

He added that the initiative is part of President Mahama’s broader economic diplomacy agenda, aimed at achieving macroeconomic stability, boosting foreign investment, and strengthening international partnerships.

He emphasised that the government intends to align the work of its foreign missions with national development goals, ensuring that citizens benefit through job creation, trade opportunities, and infrastructure projects supported by global collaborations.
