Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with Latvia has resulted in the Latvian Interior Ministry taking direct supervisory control of investigations into the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia, with fresh investigators appointed to ensure credible outcomes.

The development follows a high-level visit to the Republic of Latvia by a delegation led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

It forms part of efforts to seek justice for the late student, who died under unusual circumstances while studying there.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said the delegation held extensive discussions with Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Minister for the Interior, Police Chiefs, State Prosecutors and investigators handling the case.

According to the statement, Latvian authorities indicated that investigations were active and ongoing, but in view of the strong interest expressed by the Government of Ghana, the probe would now be directly supervised by the Latvian Interior Ministry.

The Ministry described the appointment of new investigators to the case as a step towards ensuring transparency and credibility in the process.

The Ghanaian delegation included forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, as well as Ghana’s Ambassador and consular officers from the Embassy in Berlin.

The family of the deceased, represented by his mother and aunt, also participated in the engagements with Latvian authorities.

The statement said the Latvian side welcomed additional submissions relevant to the case to assist investigations.

Consequently, the mother of the deceased, guided by the delegation, submitted a formal statement to the appropriate authorities as part of the official investigative record.

The Government of Ghana has further demanded that the final investigative report be made available to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family.

The Latvian authorities raised no objection to that request.

The Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to truth, transparency and justice, and said it would continue to pursue all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure due process is followed.

It assured that officials would maintain close contact with the bereaved family and provide consistent updates to both the family and the public.

The statement also urged the public to refrain from speculation and conjecture that could undermine ongoing investigations.

It reiterated the Government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all Ghanaians at home and abroad.
