Ghana has been ranked 14th globally for international students studying in the United States, an improvement from 18th position last year, according to the 2024–2025 Open Doors Report, which highlights growing educational exchanges between the two countries.

The report revealed that Ghana is the second-highest sending country in Sub-Saharan Africa, behind Nigeria, with 12,825 Ghanaian students studying in the U.S. in 2025—a 36.5% increase from the previous year.

Ghanaian students continue to excel across diverse disciplines, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), business, and the arts, contributing significantly to global knowledge exchange and innovation.

This year’s findings reaffirm Ghana’s standing as one of the leading Sub-Saharan African countries sending students to U.S. colleges and universities. The report also highlights the country’s strong commitment to academic excellence and the high value placed on international education.

According to the report, Ghanaian students are enrolled in a broad spectrum of U.S. institutions—from community colleges to Ivy League universities—demonstrating the accessibility, diversity, and appeal of American higher education.
