Ghana’s football community is in mourning following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The military aircraft, which departed Accra at 09:12 GMT on Tuesday, August 6, 2025, was en route to Obuasi for a high-level anti-illegal mining mission.

Also among the deceased were Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Agriculture Minister Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC, Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Authorities have since described the incident as a “national tragedy,” with the Ghana Armed Forces yet to determine the exact cause of the crash.

In response, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, has ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast and extended the government’s condolences to the grieving families.

Ghana Premier League clubs have also joined in mourning.

Bibiani GoldStars SC, 2024/25 GPL champions, shared on their official Twitter page:

“We join the nation in mourning… May their legacy live on. Rest well, heroes.”

Medeama SC echoed similar sentiments, remembering the victims for their service and dedication to the nation:

“Our hearts go out to their families. May their souls rest in peace.”

    Accra Hearts of Oak stated:

“We mourn alongside the nation and remember their dedication, leadership, and sacrifice.”

Asante Kotoko SC paid a deeply personal tribute, referring to Omane Boamah and Dr. Samuel Sarpong as “cherished fans” of the club:

“We extend our deepest condolences to their families and the nation. May their souls rest in peace.”
