The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 pm. According to a police statement, patrol teams responded to distress calls and proceeded to the scene, where a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, carrying about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, had veered into the bush while attempting to escape from six armed men. Three of the attackers were reportedly armed with pump-action guns.
During the attack, footballer Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500.
Police retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid investigations. Additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed as efforts intensify to apprehend the suspects. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
