The Ghana Navy has foiled a major illegal fuel bunkering operation along the Volta coastline, following an intelligence-led patrol conducted on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

During the operation, naval personnel intercepted seven modified canoes suspected to be engaged in illicit fuel bunkering activities along the Keta–Denu–Aflao stretch of the coastline.

According to security sources, the operation was carried out after intelligence reports indicated increased illegal fuel movement in the area.

The modified canoes were reportedly adapted to transport large quantities of fuel, posing serious safety and environmental risks to coastal communities.

The intercepted canoes and their contents were seized, while the suspects involved were taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

The Navy said further action would be taken in collaboration with relevant state agencies.

The Ghana Navy reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain and clamping down on illegal activities that threaten national security, revenue mobilisation and environmental safety.

Authorities have also cautioned individuals involved in illegal fuel bunkering to desist, warning that sustained surveillance and patrols will continue along Ghana’s coastline.
