Ghana international Salis Abdul Samed has opened up about his injury struggles during his loan spell at Sunderland.

The 25-year-old midfielder endured a difficult spell Sunderland, making 11 appearances for the Black Cats, starting three and logging a total of 283 minutes.

Despite his modest contribution, Sunderland secured promotion to mark a return to the English Premier League last season.

Sunderland joined Sunderland with high expectations, but his stint at the club took a nosedive due to injury setbacks.

Two seasons before his departure to England, Salis had formed arguably the best midfield partnership in Ligue 1 alongside Seko Fofana, and just months before making the move to the Stadium of Light, he featured prominently in RC Lens’ UEFA Champions League campaign.

“I got injured even before going to Sunderland. I had a problem with the psoas. I spoke with the doctor and he said that it would be three or four weeks, so I called…(Le Bris) and said, I’m injured, so I don’t think I can sign’. But he said, No, we’ll have a look’. So, Sunderland’s doctor came to Paris, we did tests, and he said the same thing, that it would be two or three weeks” he said as quoted by Getfootballnews.

“I arrived at Sunderland and in the first or second week, I started training, and in the second session, I suffered an injury in the same place,” revealed Abdul Samed.

He continued, “Then it took five or six months [to come back]. I came back, I started playing a bit again, and then I injured my calf, too, so then the season was basically over.”

The Black Stars midfielder is currently in the books of OGC Nice after departing RC Lens on a permanent deal during the summer transfer window.
