The Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has reaffirmed the EC’s commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency in the upcoming elections.

Speaking in a recent interview with GHOne TV, Dr. Asare acknowledged that while some individuals may misunderstand the electoral processes, leading to allegations of mistrust, the EC has consistently addressed such claims to reassure the public of its neutrality.

“We know what is right, and that is what we are doing. Maybe some people do not understand the processes very well and they rush into conclusions, which is why they make some of these allegations against us.

“Over the last six months, anytime the allegations have surfaced, the EC has always been able to respond to them in a manner that satisfies the good people of our country,” he stated.

Dr. Asare noted that Ghana’s adversarial political system, dominated by two major political parties, naturally gives rise to tensions and disputes, which can sometimes involve the Electoral Commission.

However, he stressed the EC’s dedication to ensuring that all electoral processes are transparent, inclusive, and participatory.

“We believe that the nature of our democracy is such an adversarial political system. So, you have two parties that are so dominant. One of the likely effects of having an adversarial system is that the parties go at each other.

“However, this can even extend to the Electoral Commission, and we acknowledge that. For us, what we have to do is make sure all our processes are transparent, inclusive, and participatory. If we can do that and have all the parties on board, even those who criticise us, when they look back, they will realise that the EC did the right thing,” he explained.

The Deputy Chairman also emphasised the EC’s responsibility to uphold Ghana’s reputation as a leader in the quality of elections in Africa. He reiterated the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards, ensuring that Ghana continues to set an example for democracy in the region.

“We (the EC), as an institution, have a reputation to protect. When you talk about elections in Africa, the quality of elections in Africa, Ghana is one of the best in this business. So, we know that we always have to maintain the standard,” he added.
