Get ready for a jaw-dropping revelation that highlights a critical threat to Ghana’s healthcare system! Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has pulled back the curtain on a deeply troubling issue: the massive sums of money the nation is losing due to medical negligence.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on Thursday, August 21, the Minister dropped a bombshell, disclosing that the state is forced to cough up not less than GH¢10 million on negligence cases at a single medical facility in some instances, as reported by Ghana Web. Let that sink in for a moment.

A “Major Financial Drain” Amidst Crumbling Infrastructure

Akandoh didn’t hide his deep concern. He lamented the grim reality that while Ghana’s hospitals are desperately struggling with inadequate equipment and resources, the government is simultaneously being compelled to divert precious funds to settle these costly negligence claims.

He didn’t mince words, calling this development a “major financial drain” that is actively undermining all efforts to improve and strengthen the country’s struggling health system. “Medical negligence, anytime I hear that… We spend not less than, in some cases, one facility, not less than GH¢10 million on medical negligence,” he revealed, stressing that these eye-watering figures scream for urgent reforms.

The “Monster” That Keeps Growing: Three New Cases in One Week!

The problem isn’t just about past costs; it’s a rapidly escalating crisis. Akandoh further disclosed that in just one single week, his office received three new cases of alleged negligence from the Attorney General, all demanding his immediate intervention. He expressed his dismay at the alarming frequency of such incidents, stating that they are becoming a recurring, dangerous threat.

He starkly referred to this alarming trend as a “monster” confronting Ghana’s health sector, emphasizing that the situation demands “bold and immediate action.”

While the Minister couldn’t share all the details publicly at this stage, he assured the nation that his office is actively working on concrete measures to tackle this colossal problem head-on.

The message is clear: the government is determined to confront this issue decisively. The goal? To safeguard both the well-being of patients and to protect the already limited financial resources desperately needed for Ghana’s healthcare. This is a developing story that demands close attention!
