Former General Secretary of the GOC, Richard Akpokavie, is reportedly preparing to run for the presidency of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) in the upcoming elections.
According to Graphic Sports, Akpokavie has officially announced his intentions through his campaign team, named RAfGOCP2025.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, members of RAfGOCP2025 outlined Akpokavie’s plans to transform the GOC and enhance Ghana’s presence on the global sports stage.
“Mr. Richard Akpokavie will use his influence and expertise in Ghana sports to attract corporate bodies and international entities to support sports and sponsor sporting activities in the country,” RAfGOCP2025 told Graphic Sports in a phone conversation last Saturday.
They mentioned that Mr. Akpokavie will establish functional subcommittees and bring together all sporting disciplines, federations, and association heads in the country to utilize sports as a tool for creating jobs and generating revenue.
“He will unveil his manifesto in a week or two, and we will receive the details. He is so passionate about sports in Ghana that he will spare no effort to make sports a thriving industry in Ghana,” they stated.
Akpokavie, a pioneer of Ghana Hockey, is expected to bring a wealth of talent and teamwork expertise if elected.
A former student of Achimota School, the respected legal practitioner honed his hockey skills at Achimota School before representing the national team. He later played a key role in establishing the Under 17 National Hockey team.
The GOC elections, scheduled for later this year, are expected to be fiercely contested as candidates vie to shape the future of Ghana’s sports direction on the global stage.
The GOC will hold an extraordinary congress on January 25 to discuss the upcoming electoral congress and set a date for the congress.
