The Union and Senior Staff Association of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a nationwide strike.

According to the union, the strike will begin on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, in protest against the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).

The strike, which will continue indefinitely, involves workers at GHA’s head office, regional offices, road maintenance units, and other facilities across the country.

In a statement, the association outlined several key demands, including the cessation of the implementation of the Act and the revocation of appointments made under it, which they argue violate Ghana’s Constitution.

“These appointments are void, as they contravene Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution,” the association stated.

The union is further calling for broad consultations on the reforms needed within GHA, in line with the World Bank’s 2022 ‘Diagnostic Study for Transforming Ghana Highway Authority’.

It argues that the Act would reduce GHA’s autonomy and increase bureaucratic inefficiency.

The union is also demanding the removal of GHA Board Chairman Ing. I. K. Mensah and Chief Executive Ing. Collins B. Donkor, accusing them of failing to engage workers adequately during the drafting of the Act and endorsing reforms that do not serve the interests of staff or improve the Authority’s operations.

“The workers of GHA have lost confidence in these leaders,” the association stated, adding that the proposed changes would harm both staff welfare and institutional efficiency.
