Ghana defender Jerome Opoku admits his club, Istanbul Basaksehir, has had a challenging campaign in the Turkish Super Lig.

The 26-year-old defender has been a consistent performer, starting 24 league games and contributing two goals and two assists.

However, Basaksehir currently sits eighth in the table, struggling to match last season’s achievements.

“We’ve had a pretty rough season so far compared to last season,” Opoku admitted in an interview with Flashscore.

“We played in the Conference League but failed to make it out of the group stage. We are out of the League Cup as well and now sit in eighth place in the league.”

Despite the setbacks, the Ghanaian international remains optimistic about his club’s European qualification chances.

“The aim is to qualify for Europe, so we will work harder from now until the season ends to try and achieve it,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, but that’s what the game is all about, so we keep pushing.”

Opoku’s performances in both club and international football have been impressive, and he remains determined to maintain his form as Ghana pushes for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

    Key Corrections:

“Have had” → “has had” (Subject-verb agreement)

“League phase” → “group stage” (More standard football terminology)

“Also” → “as well” (Smoother phrasing)

“Now in eighth place” → “now sit in eighth place” (More natural construction)

“Make Europe” → “qualify for Europe” (More precise phrasing)

“From now till” → “from now until” (Formal correction)

This version improves readability while keeping the original meaning intact.
