Black Stars coach Otto Addo has explained his tactics against Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday evening in Accra.

Ghana battled to a 1-0 victory, courtesy a second half strike from defender Alexander Djiku.

The Black Stars were far from convincing but made sure they collected all three points to enhance their chances of qualifying for the tournament in North America.

After the match, the German-born trainer was quizzed about his approach to the game, which he disclosed was built on a defensive style.

“This is football, sometimes you have to fix your tactics. I knew they (Mali) needed to win so we played a little bit defensively and we had good headers in our team because we have three tall defenders in our team and at the end that is his opinion and I understand,” he said.

“Had my tactics, we had our tactics and we decided well and what is most important is the three points,” he added.

The Black Stars are just a win away from reaching USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.

Ghana will travel to face the Central African Republic in the penultimate match of the qualifiers before engaging Comoros in Accra in October.
