As anticipation builds ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, British sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol believes African teams, especially Ghana, stand on the brink of something historic.

Speaking to 3Sports, Solhekol suggested that conditions in North America, coupled with Africa’s expanded representation, could create the perfect environment for a breakout performance.

And for him, Ghana could be the team to follow Morocco’s trailblazing path from Qatar 2022.

Morocco shocked the world three years ago when they became the first African nation to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.

Their success wasn’t accidental, it was built on tactical discipline, European-hardened players, and a unified mentality. Solhekol believes Ghana now possesses similar ingredients.

He points to Ghana’s growing pool of young, dynamic footballers thriving across Europe. Over the last decade, the Black Stars have quietly rebuilt, stocking the squad with technically gifted midfielders, ball-playing defenders, and explosive forwards. For Solhekol, ignoring Ghana in 2026 would be a mistake.

“I think it would be very dangerous to underestimate a side like Ghana. You saw how well Morocco did at the last World Cup. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ghana did what Morocco did last time round,” he said.

With nine African nations already qualified, and DR Congo chasing a tenth spot, the continent enters the expanded 48-team tournament with renewed belief.

The World Cup draw on Friday, December 5, 2025, will reveal Ghana’s path.

“This World Cup will suit African sides. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ghana does what Morocco did in the last World Cup.”
