‘Ghana became Ghana only eight years ago?’ – Tampuli challenges Chief Justice

Gushegu MP Alhassan Tampuli has questioned the Chief Justice’s reference to the performance of state institutions over the past eight years, asking whether Ghana only became a country during that period.

The MP said the Chief Justice’s comments risk creating the impression that he has taken sides in Ghana’s political discourse.

Mr Tampuli challenged the Chief Justice’s apparent comparison of the performance of state institutions under the current and previous administrations.

“Ghana became Ghana only eight years ago? And so our Chief Justice only remembers what happened before eight years ago. Doesn’t remember what happened 20 years ago, 24 years ago, or 30 years ago?” he asked.

His comments follow remarks by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie during a visit to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) on Wednesday, September 2.

The Chief Justice praised the performance of MIIF and other public institutions under the current administration, saying some of the developments he had witnessed had left him wondering what Ghana had been doing over the past eight years.

Mr Tampuli argued that the comments were particularly concerning because political disputes can ultimately end up before the Judiciary.

“When politicians have a dispute, most likely it will end up before the Judiciary. Now, this is a Chief Justice who has already taken a position,” he said.

He accused the Chief Justice of effectively taking a political position by commending the performance of state institutions and urging support for what he described as the current administration’s agenda.

According to Mr Tampuli, the Chief Justice must exercise greater restraint because of the constitutional responsibility and neutrality expected of his office.

“I think that the Chief Justice’s position makes it easy for all of us to identify him as one person who has taken sides in our political dispensation,” he said.

Mr Tampuli called on the public to condemn the comments, insisting that the Judiciary must preserve its neutrality, particularly when political disputes could eventually come before the courts.
