The Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, has underscored the importance of a strong and responsible partnership between the military and the media, particularly in light of emerging security threats within the sub-region.

Delivering the keynote address at a Defence Press Corps workshop held at Burma Camp in Accra on February 25, 2026, Air Vice Marshal Mensah-Larkai described the gathering as both timely and relevant, noting that it aligns with the Armed Forces’ vision of strengthening military-media collaboration and enhancing communication strategies in today’s complex information environment.

According to AVM Mensah-Larkai, the media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception, influencing national discourse and supporting security operations, particularly in the digital age.

“A well-informed citizenry is an essential pillar of national security. For this reason, the relationship between the Ghana Armed Forces and the media, especially the Defense Press Corps, must rest on trust, mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose.

“By the nature of its mandate, the armed forces often operate at the intersection of confidentiality and accountability.

“It is therefore critical that our narratives remain accurate and that they are communicated in ways that safeguard operational success while protecting national security. This workshop provides a unique platform for open dialogue, capacity building and the exchange of best practices, benefiting both military and civilian communication professionals,” he said.

He stressed that the relationship between the Armed Forces and the media especially the Defence Press Corps must be built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared sense of purpose.

He explained that by the nature of its mandate, the military often operates at the intersection of confidentiality and accountability. As such, he emphasised the need for accurate reporting that safeguards operational success while protecting national security.

The Chief of Staff commended the Defence Press Corps for its work since its establishment in 2017, noting that it has significantly reduced reporting errors and fostered greater understanding of military affairs.
