Ghana and Japan have signed a landmark bilateral agreement to bolster educational cooperation, promote sustainable development, and equip students with essential green and digital skills for the future.

The agreement was formalized in Tokyo by Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The agreement aims to foster inclusive, high-quality education and ensure that education in both countries aligns with global goals for sustainability and technological advancement.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, Haruna Iddrisu described the agreement as “strategic and transformative,” emphasizing its alignment with Ghana’s Education Strategic Plan (ESP 2018–2030) and its goal of building a knowledge-driven economy.

He expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and MEXT for their continued technical support and shared dedication to educational excellence, calling the partnership a “vital contribution to global progress.”

Haruna Iddrisu highlighted Ghana’s commitment to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4—ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education.

He praised Japan’s global leadership in ESD, referencing the UNESCO ESD Centre in Okayama and Japan’s history of hosting major global forums on the topic.

The agreement builds on decades of Japanese support for Ghana’s education sector through initiatives like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Sakura Science Exchange Program, and various teacher training projects.

Officials from both nations expressed confidence that this enhanced collaboration will empower youth, drive innovation, and create resilient education systems capable of addressing the demands of a rapidly evolving world.
