The historic Osu Castle in Accra became the vibrant backdrop for a special celebration of peace, unity, and wellness as Ghana and India came together to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga.

Dignitaries, yoga practitioners, and citizens gathered to honor the ancient practice, reinforcing its timeless role in fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The event featured a series of speeches, performances, and yoga sessions, all aimed at highlighting the universal relevance of yoga.

India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Manish Gupta, kicked off the proceedings with a heartfelt message on yoga’s global significance.

He explained that yoga transcends physical exercise; it is a journey of self-discovery and balance. Drawing a comparison to a finely tuned musical instrument, he emphasised that the body, like such instruments, requires precision and harmony to perform at its best.

Gupta also expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming support from the Ghanaian community, regional authorities, and local yoga organizations.

He highlighted the nationwide yoga events that took place over the past month in cities such as Cape Coast, Kumasi, Tamale, and Ho, thanks to collaboration with key yoga institutions.

In her keynote address, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, shared a deeply personal story about her late father, whose devotion to yoga she believes contributed to his remarkable longevity of 106 years.

“Maybe yoga gave him those extra years,” she said, reflecting on her father’s practice. With humor, she added, “I used to enjoy watching him stand on his head… and now I’ve just seen it happen here too,” drawing laughter from the audience.

Gomashie also celebrated the shared cultural values between Ghana and India, noting how both nations are committed to spiritual growth, cultural richness, and the pursuit of peace and progress.

“As we gather today to celebrate this ancient Indian practice, let us reflect on the deep values we share with India—values that have shaped our cultures and continue to guide us toward a future of unity,” she said.

The event was also attended by Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency in the Oti Region, alongside yoga enthusiasts from across the country.
