President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed a GH¢20 million financial injection into Ghana’s film industry, including Kumawood and Ghallywood, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the sector and support economic diversification.

This was first announced in 2025 by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, during the budget reading before Parliament.

Reiterating the commitment during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026, President Mahama stated that the government has set aside GH¢20 million specifically for the film industry, aimed at revitalising local filmmaking and production.

“Government has allocated GH¢20 million to the film sector alone. This is going to the film sector to support Kumawood and Ghallywood and all the woods,” he said.

He said an additional GH¢20 million has been allocated for other creative sub-sectors such as music, fashion, visual arts, and related fields, bringing the total “creative injection.”

He added that the funding is expected to bolster the creative economy, create jobs and strengthen Ghana’s cultural export capacity, forming part of a larger strategy to diversify the economic base beyond traditional sectors.
