Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has disclosed that the decision to part ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo was taken prior to the team’s defeat to Germany.

According to Acheampong, the GFA had already resolved to sack the 50-year-old following Ghana’s heavy 5-1 loss to Austria at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna during the March international window.

He explained that the subsequent 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart did not influence the final outcome, as the decision had already been made.

“Irrespective of the Germany result, Otto Addo was going to be sacked. The decision was formulated after the Austria match; we were just buying time,” Acheampong said in an interview.

Addo’s dismissal came despite guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with concerns raised over inconsistent performances, particularly against top-tier opposition.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for international friendlies against Mexico and Wales as part of preparations for the tournament.

Ghana will make their fifth World Cup appearance, having been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
