The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to introduce a minimum wage structure for Ghana Premier League players, aiming to enhance player welfare and promote professionalism in the country’s top-flight football.

The Ghana Football Association‘s Executive Council (EXCO) has approved a proposal to introduce a minimum wage structure for Premier League players, which will be presented to the GFA Congress for final approval before implementation in the 2025/26 league season.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Starr Sports Digest, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the policy stating, “The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO,” he said.

The introduction of a minimum wage structure for top-flight players in Ghana aims to provide fair and consistent compensation, establishing a financial baseline for clubs to follow.

This move is part of the GFA’s efforts to prevent player exodus, elevate league standards, and increase competitiveness in local football.

Ghana’s top clubs have long faced issues with low player salaries, prompting many talented players to seek better opportunities in lower-tier foreign leagues. The new minimum wage policy aims to tackle this issue and keep top talent in the local league.

Successful implementation of the minimum wage policy could lead to increased player morale, talent retention, and new investment in the Ghana Premier League, ultimately driving long-term growth and sustainability for the league.
