The Ghana Football Association today, January 10, 2025, celebrated the life of Christian Atsu on what would have been his 33rd birthday.

The talented and dedicated winger left an indelible mark on the beautiful game. Atsu tragically passed away after being trapped under rubble during an earthquake in Turkey that claimed more than 46,000 lives.

As a player, he represented English clubs Newcastle United and Everton, had a spell in Portugal with Portuguese giants FC Porto, and later played in Turkey with Hatayspor, where he met his untimely death. Atsu was known for his incredible speed and skill on the pitch.

He was part of the Black Stars team that won silver at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was also named the Player of the Tournament and won the Goal of the Tournament.

Off the pitch, Atsu was a kind and generous soul, always willing to lend a helping hand. Through his partnership with the Crime Check Foundation (CCF), he paid fines for ex-convicts to facilitate their release.

Though he may be gone, Atsu’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. Today, Ghanaians remember his birthday and celebrate the incredible life he lived, albeit far too briefly.
