The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a public apology to Ghanaians following the failure of the Black Stars to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades.

In its statement, the GFA acknowledged the nation’s disappointment and outlined its next steps to address the debacle, including plans to rebuild the team and improve its performance in future competitions.

The GFA Executive Council convened on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, to analyze the qualifying campaign and determine strategies for rebuilding the Black Stars.

In a statement published on its website, the GFA said:

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to express its sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana for the Black Stars’ inability to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

“We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans.

“We acknowledge that the team’s performance did not meet the high expectations of the nation, and for that, we are truly sorry.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to our loyal football fans for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the qualifying campaign. Your passion and dedication are what drive us to strive for excellence.”

The Black Stars failed to secure a single win in their six qualifying games, earning just three points from three draws and losing three matches.

Despite the AFCON setback, the Black Stars still have a chance to redeem themselves by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Currently second in Group I, tied with Comoros on nine points, Ghana remains in contention for a spot in football’s biggest tournament.

The GFA announced that on Thursday, November 28, 2024, it will meet again with stakeholders to solicit ideas for improving the development of football in Ghana.
