The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has commended journalists in the country for their consistent criticism of the GFA, stating that it demonstrates their desire for the betterment of Ghanaian football.

Over the years, sports journalists in Ghana have taken on a watchdog role, frequently demanding accountability and reforms within the football fraternity. One notable instance was the Save Ghana Football demonstration, which occurred in February 2024.

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has sparked numerous instances of journalists questioning the administrators within the association, persistently advocating for changes.

Speaking in an interview on Happy FM, Asante Twum stated that he believes the criticisms are well-intentioned and aimed at advancing the development of football in Ghana, clarifying that the association does not perceive such criticism as hatred.

“The failure to qualify for the next tournament has been met with lots of backlash and criticism, but I want to say we appreciate all the top journalists who are voicing their concerns. When you use the media to voice your concerns, I understand you don’t hate me or the other administrators,” he said.

Asante Twum also acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on the AFCON, highlighting the emotional bond built between the team and its fans through consecutive tournament appearances.

“Our failure to qualify for such a major competition on the African continent is a big blow. Everyone wants to see their country participate at AFCON. We’ve had consecutive appearances since missing out in 2004, which was a period of transition as we integrated the next generation into the team.

“This consistent participation has helped build the love many people have for the team,” he further stated.
