L-R: Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku L-R: Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has clarified that Jordan Ayew has been appointed as the substantive captain of the Black Stars.

According to him, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has maintained his role as first vice-captain.

Additionally, West Ham United forward Mohammed Kudus was chosen as the second vice-captain, while Fenerbahçe’s Alexander Djiku takes over as the third vice-captain.

Speaking in an interview with Metro TV, Asante Twum noted that the decision was taken by head coach Otto Addo, and the entire squad was informed about it, hence there is no controversy as alleged.

“It is not about individual aspirations; it is about what we want to do together, and it is about believing in the plan and the vision. The coach has made the decision to make Jordan Ayew the captain.

“With Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Alexander Djiku serving as the first, second, and third vice-captains of the Black Stars respectively. These players are aware of the structure and the order,” he said.

Eyebrows were raised when Thomas Partey seemed surprised after Ayew gave him the captain’s armband during the Black Stars‘ match against Madagascar in Morocco.

In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars defeated Chad 5-0 on March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

After six matches played, Ghana lead Group I with 15 points, followed by Comoros with 12 points, while Madagascar lie in third position with 10 points.
