Former Germany striker Gerald Asamoah has paid a courtesy visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Asamoah has been in Ghana in the past few days, where he was awarded by the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, with the Federal Cross of Merit at an event in Accra.

Described as the ‘bridge builder’ between Ghana and Germany, the Ghana-born ex-footballer has championed a life-saving heart surgery programme for children in the African nation.

Asamoah funds the trip and work of German surgeons through the Gerald Asamoah Foundation every year to correct heart defects in young Ghanaians.

His visit to Otumfuo is reportedly part of his decision to extend the programme from Accra to Kumasi, where he will fund the travel of doctors to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for the annual activity.

Asamoah and his team were warmly welcomed by the King, who encouraged the former Schalke player to continue his worthy course.
