Former Black Stars striker George Alhassan has backed his former club, Accra Great Olympics, to beat city rivals Hearts of Oak in the upcoming Democracy Cup.

The 1982 AFCON hero believes Olympics hold the upper hand in the historic rivalry despite their current status as a Division One side.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Joel Eshun exclusively ahead of the game, Alhassan confidently tipped the “Wonder Club” to come out on top.

“Olympics are the landlords of Greater Accra and Hearts are the tenants, so it is going to be a very difficult match”.

“Olympic is in Division One but that doesn’t matter. Olympics and Hearts matches are difficult to predict, but I wish Olympics win,” he said.

His prediction has added spice to the much-anticipated showdown on September 5, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium where both teams will renew one of Ghana’s fiercest football rivalries.

The Democracy Cup, introduced in 2024, is a parliamentary initiative designed to promote democracy, civic responsibility, and peaceful coexistence through football.

The 2025 edition will feature a curtain-raiser between Parliament’s team, led by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and the Judiciary before the headline clash between Hearts and Olympics.

Nicknamed “Jair” after Brazil’s World Cup star Jairzinho, Alhassan is remembered for his decisive goals in Ghana’s AFCON triumphs in 1978 and 1982.

At club level, he enjoyed his most successful years with Great Olympics, winning the league in his debut season in 1974 and later returning for a second spell after stints in Gabon and South Korea.
