Legendary Ghanaian footballer George Alhassan has revealed how Accra Great Olympics were unfairly relegated in the Ghana Premier League some time ago.

According to him, during his time as head coach of the club, unfair officiating influenced the team’s relegation from the GPL.

Alhassan noted that there were instances where a referee overturned a correct penalty decision after initially awarding it.

He indicated that it was the malicious intention of some prominent football officials to ensure the team’s relegation by any means necessary, which deeply affected him.

“Our relegation was suspicious and not on fairgrounds. We had a very good team, and most of the players signed for top clubs. There was a match where the referee whistled for a clear penalty, and after consulting the linesman, the decision was reversed.

“We had no issue with any GFA official, so it was surprising. We were one of the best teams, so it was baffling that we were relegated. Maybe some people were behind it, but I can’t mention names. It was very painful,” he said in Twi during an interview with Asempa FM.

However, the football legend did not specify the particular season his team suffered relegation.

    About George Alhassan

Alhassan played for Accra Great Olympics from 1974 to 1982 and later returned to play from 1985 to 1990. During this time, he won the Ghana Premier League in his debut season in 1974.

From 1982 to 1984, he played for FC 105 Libreville in Gabon, where he won two trophies: the Gabon Championnat National in 1983 and the Coupe du Gabon Interclub in 1984.

George Alhassan was named the Ghana Premier League top scorer in 1977 and 1985 and was also part of the Black Stars’ African Cup of Nations winning team in 1978 and 1982.

George Alhassan has served as the team manager for Accra Great Olympics, a position he has held since 2020.
