Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, has renewed calls for the establishment of an independent body to manage the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie argued that the recent involvement of government funding in the domestic league makes it imperative for the GFA to adopt a more professional and transparent management structure.

“With the government now investing in our league, I believe the leadership of the Ghana Football Association must set up a different body to run the league.”

“The Premier League must be independent. It should be managed by an independent body to ensure professionalism and transparency,” Afriyie said.

According to Afriyie, separating the league from the GFA secretariat would help improve accountability and restore public confidence in the competition.

“The league should be separated from the secretariat of the Football Association and the autonomous body should be reporting to the General Secretary,” he added.

Afriyie’s comments come on the back of long standing discussions within Ghana football circles about reforming the management of the top light league.

In 2019, GFA President Kurt Okraku announced plans for the Premier League to eventually be managed by an independent body.
