The former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has warned against the impending dangers of illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey.

He said Ghana’s agricultural landscape is at risk of depletion if galamsey activities are not halted as soon as possible.

The former minister said an unimaginable hunger is set to befall the country in the future if the issues are addressed.

“The hunger that will befall us in the future is unimaginable. Illegal miners are destroying all our pipelines and biodiversity and nobody cares,” he said as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the country lacks visionary leaders who have the country’s progress at heart.

“We don’t have the crop of leaders who are ready to sacrifice for future generations. The young people of today have lost hope. We are not serious about the corruption fight. Leading this country is not about satisfying your family alone and leaving the generation to suffer,” he added.

The issue of galamsey has become topical recently as its activities continue to destroy major water bodies in the country.

Galamsey has also led to the poisoning of the environment, causing deformities in unborn babies.
