The Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency, Kofi Amankwa-Manu has stated that the fight against illegal mining is ineffective because the key illegal miners have not been dealt with.

Speaking to Joy News on April 8, 2025, he stated that the directive by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, to deploy police commanders to the mining areas is not feasible in the fight against illegal mining.

He disclosed that some perpetrators of the illicit mining are influential people in society who remain untouchable to security operatives.

“What do you achieve by just transferring police officers? How are they going to fix the problem when the actors of the problem, themselves, are not being arrested or not being dealt with?

“You and I know that there are also bigwigs behind this thing. I agree that the law is no respecter of persons but you will also agree with me that some people are bigger than the law. If indeed, we are to apply the law equally, then we would be dealing with this issue,” he explained.

He emphasised that the illegal mining problem has been politicised for years but expressed relief over the sudden consciousness of the citizenry about the menace.

“This illegal mining issue has been with us for a very long time and so, when people politicised it year after year, it was very scary for me. But I’m glad that, now, we’ve all come to the realisation that if we do not do something drastic about it, trust me, there will be no Ghana in coming years”, he said.
