American politician of Ghanaian descent, Gabe Amo, has welcomed the Black Stars’ decision to base their pre-tournament camp in Rhode Island ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions will prepare for the global showpiece at Bryant University, which has been selected as Ghana’s training base before their matches in the United States and Canada.

Amo, who represents Rhode Island’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, expressed pride at hosting the West African nation. In a post on X, the Pawtucket-born lawmaker described the decision as a major boost for the state and said he was “grateful to pitch in” to help secure the arrangement.

The 2026 tournament, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will see Ghana national football team compete in Group L alongside Panama, 1966 champions England and 2018 finalists Croatia.

Ghana will open their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before facing England in Boston on June 23. The Black Stars will conclude their group stage fixtures against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

The team is aiming to make a significant impact at the tournament after previous appearances in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022.
