Ghanaian referees have received a major boost in their welfare conditions Ghanaian referees have received a major boost in their welfare conditions

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced an improved financial package for Ghanaian referees for the 2025/2026 season.

The GFA noted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local football and motivate referees to deliver top-quality officiating, reducing the incidence of poor decisions during matches.

Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress on August 12, 2025, GFA President Kurt Okraku said the reviewed conditions demonstrate his administration’s commitment to improving local football standards.

“Our referees will take centre stage in terms of their welfare going into the new season. The Executive Committee, having reviewed all operational needs, has approved new working conditions for our referees in the GPL, DoL, and WPL,” he stated.

‘It’s premature’ – Kurt Okraku on whether he will run for a third term as GFA president

Check out the details of the new package below:

    Salary:

According to the GFA, FIFA-accredited Ghanaian referees will now receive GH¢2,500 for each Ghana Premier League (GPL) game they officiate.

Non-FIFA referees will be paid GH¢2,000 per game, while referees in the Division One League (DoL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL) will each receive GH¢1,000 per match.

    Insurance:

It was noted that the 280 referees in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Division One League (DoL), and Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be enrolled in an insurance policy covering Group Life Cover, Critical Illness, Permanent Disability, Medical Expenses, and Workmen’s Compensation.

Additional benefits will include spouse, child, and parent benefits, as well as funeral support.

The GFA disclosed that match commissioners will be considered for inclusion in the scheme from the 2026/27 season.

    Kit and Transportation:

Each referee will receive two pairs of boots per season, three sets of uniforms in different colours, and three warm-up uniforms.

The GFA will also maintain its partnership with STC, enabling referees to enjoy a 50% travel discount for match duties.
