Ashanti regional minister Dr. (Med), Frank Amoakohene has shared insights into his political journey, tracing his path from student leadership to mainstream politics.

In a candid interview on Starr FM with host Bola Ray, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that his leadership ambitions took root during his school days.

“Right from school, I’ve been in leadership, and I think the experience and learning process I went through shouldn’t go to waste. I should seek to serve the good people of Ghana, and that includes my peers,” he stated.

His journey began in medical school, where he actively participated in student governance. He served as the president of the Health Students Association for the western part of Ghana and later became the national president of the National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG).

His influence extended further as an executive member of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), where he played a key role as the chairman of the central planning committee for NUGS’ 50th anniversary celebrations.

“During that time, I had the opportunity to interact with all the former NUGS presidents. It gave me a solid foundation in leadership,” Dr. Amoakohene recalled his deep involvement in student affairs led him to contest for the presidency of NUGS the following year—a position he successfully secured.

After his tenure in student leadership, Dr. Amoakohene transitioned into mainstream politics. He contested the parliamentary primary for the Manhyia South Constituency at just 28 years old while still in medical school.

“I won the primary, but I lost the main election,” he admitted. However, he viewed the experience as a pivotal moment.

“Even though I lost, I was able to significantly increase the number of votes in a stronghold constituency. That became a stepping stone because it proved my political potential. The party leadership took notice and saw what I could do, so I was later given the opportunity to serve as the Ashanti Regional Secretary,” he explained.
