A gunman who opened fire at Fort Stewart Army base in southeast Georgia this morning, striking at least five soldiers, has been apprehended after the base was urgently locked down.
The shooter struck the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area of the base, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, which includes the Wright and Evans Army Airfield.
Footage from the incident circulating on social media showed a number of soldiers seeking shelter as the active shooter warning was issued. The shooter’s identity has not been released.
President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and the White House is ‘monitoring the situation’.
Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It’s home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and family members.
Homeland Security ‘monitoring’ Fort Stewart incident as Noem issues prayers
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been ‘briefed’ on the tragedy at Fort Stewart.
Noem, in a post on X, confirmed her department is ‘actively monitoring the situation on the ground’.
‘We are praying for the victims and their families,’ she added.
What is the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team?
The shooter struck the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area of the base.
The Army’s 2ABCT was created in 2016 when the service added more than 200 vehicles to an infantry unit of roughly 4,200 soldiers.
Also known as the ‘Spartan Brigade,’ the Army has called the unit its ‘most modern land fighting force.’

Jon Burns, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives released a statement alongside wife Dayle after news of the Fort Stewart shooting on Wednesday.
‘Dayle and I join alongside every Georgian in praying for the families and loved ones of those injured in today’s senseless tragedy at Fort Stewart,’ he said.
‘Please continue to lift up the entire Fort Stewart community and all of the brave men and women responding on the scene.’
FBI aiding Army in shooting response
FBI agents in nearby Savannah are aiding Army investigators in their response to the shooting at Fort Stewart.
The bureau is ‘aware of the incident at Fort Stewart’ and its agents are ‘coordinating with Army Criminal Investigation’, the FBI said in a statement.
Georgia Democrat ‘heartbroken’ by Fort Stewart tragedy
US Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) says he is ‘heartbroken’ by the mass shooting at the Army base in his home state.
He is ‘closely’ monitoring the situation and urged everyone to ‘pray for the safety of our servicemembers, staff, and their families’.

Authorities were dispatched to the shooting in the 2nd ABCT complex at 10.56am Wednesdat.
The shooter was apprehended at 11.35am, the Army said.
The 2nd ABCT complex remains under lockdown, although the base lifted the lockdown of the main cantonment area at 12.10pm.

The soldiers received treatment on-site before being moved to Winn Army Community Hospital.

US Rep. Buddy Carter, whose district includes Fort Stewart, said in an online post that he’s monitoring the shooting.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene also issued a statement on the tragedy, asking her followers to pray for all those impacted.
Georgia Governor ‘saddened’ by Army base tragedy
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in a statement that he is remaining ‘in close contact with law enforcement on the ground’ as the situation continues.
He added that he and his family are ‘saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart’.
Locals warned to seek shelter with gunman at large
Officials warned anyone in the area of Fort Stewart to seek shelter, stay inside and lock all windows and doors.
Local schools followed the army base in locking down the area, but said that there is ‘no immediate threat to the schools at this time.’
A suspect has reportedly been identified by law enforcement, however their identity has not been released and it is unclear if they are in custody.
