Sad to report the passing of former US Olympian and multiple regional champion Vanes Martirosyan at the age of 39, after a two year battle with Cancer. Born in Armenia, Martirosyan’s family immigrated to the U.S., settling in Glendale, CA when he was four. Martirosyan began boxing at age seven and represented the USA in the 2004 Athens Olympics at eighteen years old. While he failed to medal at the games, along the way in his amateur career, he would defeat several future world champions in Timothy Bradley, Jr., Austin Trout and split two fights with Andre Berto. As a pro, Martirosyan would win several regional belts: WBO Inter-Continental Light Middleweight Title (2014), WBC Silver Light Middleweight Title (2011-12), WBA International Light Middleweight Title (2010), NABF Light Middleweight Title (2009-10) and WBO NABO Light Middleweight Title (2009-10). Nicknamed “The Nightmare,” he was a tough out for anybody. Martirsyan would defeat former champs Kassim Ouma and Ishe Smith. He would challenge for world honors twice, losing via twelve round decision to Demetrius Andrade (WBO Jr. Middle, 2013) and getting stopped in two by Gennadiy Golovkin (WBA/WBC/IBF Middle, 2018). In between he lost to Erislandy Lara and Jermell Charlo via 12 & 10 round decisions. Martirosyan finished with a career record of 36-4-1, 21 KOs. He leaves behind a wife, son and daughter. Rest In Peace Champ…
