Ghanaian football paid a solemn farewell to former striker Peter Lamptey, affectionately known as “Goal Thief,” who was laid to rest in Accra last Friday.

Lamptey, who died in October 2025 at age 78, was honoured at a burial service at the Kaneshie Methodist Church before his interment at the Asere Royal Cemetery on February 27. The ceremony drew a cross-section of the football fraternity, including notable former players such as Mohammed Polo and other contemporaries who shared in his golden era.

Traditional leaders, among them Nii Ahene Nunoo III and Nii Ayitey Kane II, were also present, underscoring Lamptey’s influence beyond the pitch.

Renowned for his sharp instincts inside the penalty area, Lamptey built his legacy on clinical finishing and impeccable timing. His most memorable season came in 1973 when he powered Accra Hearts of Oak to the league title, scoring 21 goals in 26 matches. That feat earned him the inaugural SWAG Goal King Award from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana.

Before joining Hearts, Lamptey had made his name with Accra Great Olympics, where his prolific scoring first captured national attention.
