A former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has backed the Food and Drugs Authority’s decision to seize illegal drugs at the country’s port.

In an interview with Okay FM, Ahmed emphasised that the international law allows for the confiscation and destruction of unlawful drugs found at the port.

“As long as the drugs are illegal, authorities have the right to destroy it, and it would be wrong to let such substances pass through the country’s port unchecked,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Rhoda Appiah, Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, has stated that as Ghana continues to fight illegal drug trafficking and abuse, efforts to seize drugs at the ports are part of strategies to address these issues and protect public health.

She warned against the opioid-based drug, ‘red,’ being sold without prescription, stating that it has potential dangers when abused.

Rhoda advised pharmacists and healthcare providers to insist on prescriptions and avoid selling drugs without them.

She also urged the youth to stay away from illegal drugs, citing the devastating impact on their health and on the country’s development.
