Former Ghana international and Hearts of Oak legend Peter Lamptey, affectionately known as “The Goal Thief”, has passed away.

Reports indicate the sad event occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 9, 2025, at about 1:00 am.

Lamptey, born on April 6, 1946, was one of Ghana’s most clinical forwards during the golden years of Accra Hearts of Oak.

A feared striker in the 1970s, he earned the nickname “Goal Thief” for his uncanny ability to appear in the right place at the right time.

He was part of Hearts’ famous “Fearsome Fivesome” alongside Mohammed Polo, Mama Acquah, Robert Hammond, and Anas Seidu, a front line that terrorised defences across the continent.

Lamptey captained Hearts to the 1977 African Cup of Champions final, cementing his status as one of the club’s greats.

At the national level, Lamptey represented Ghana at the 1972 Munich Olympics, featuring in all of the Black Stars’ matches during the tournament.

Domestically, his legacy glitters with silverware: He won the Ghana Premier League on five occasions, in 1971, 1973, 1976, 1978, and 1979 during his glittering spell with Hearts of Oak.

Lamptey also lifted the Ghanaian FA Cup three times, in 1973, 1974, and 1979.

Individually, he claimed the Ghana League Top Scorer award in 1973, a season that cemented his reputation as one of the most lethal forwards of his era.

After his years with Hearts, Lamptey also featured for Accra Great Olympics, bringing his playing career full circle within the capital’s two biggest clubs.
