The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that his ministry has commenced investigations into the murder of an 18-year-old Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, who died in Latvia.

Okudzeto Ablakwa made this known in a post shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced immediate investigations through relevant diplomatic channels. We shall provide the public with regular updates”, he wrote.

Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, died on June 4, 2025.

According to the family, he had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga.

On June 1, 2025, just three days before his death, he reportedly sent a disturbing voice note claiming he had been poisoned.

On June 4, 2025, his relatives were informed that he had allegedly fallen from the sixth floor of his apartment and died.

“We received news that he fell from the sixth floor and died. But we said, no, that cannot be true. There’s no way he would commit suicide. So I wrote letters to the Foreign Ministry, to the school, and contacted the police.

“But we realized the police were not responding and appeared to be covering up because the people involved were Latvian nationals,” Sarah Nimli, a family spokesperson recounted.

The family further revealed that after receiving no satisfactory response, a relative travelled to Latvia, accompanied by a representative from the Ghana Embassy in Berlin, which oversees Ghana’s affairs in Latvia, to seek clarity on the incident.

His remains were returned to Ghana on July 23, 2025, for burial.
