Winfried Anton Schäfer, Technical Advisor of the Black Stars
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced German coach Winfried Anton Schäfer as the new Technical Advisor of the Black Stars, bringing decades of expertise to the national team setup.
At 75, Schäfer is a seasoned football tactician with an impressive résumé, having managed several national teams and club sides across different continents.
His most notable achievement came in 2002, when he guided Cameroon to Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory, solidifying his reputation as a top-level coach in African football.

AFCON winner with Cameroon
Schäfer led the Indomitable Lions to AFCON triumph in 2002, defeating Senegal in the final. His tactical expertise helped establish Cameroon as one of Africa’s dominant teams at the time.
2003 FIFA Confederations Cup runner-up
Under his leadership, Cameroon reached the final of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, narrowly losing to France via Thierry Henry’s 97th-minute golden goal.
Despite the loss, the team’s performance on the global stage was widely praised.
Prolific Bundesliga career
Before transitioning into management, Schäfer was a talented midfielder in the Bundesliga, making 403 appearances and scoring 46 goals
