On Friday, March 15, 2024, the GFA, after scrutinizing several applications, chose Otto Addo as the best man to lead Ghana to achieve the trophy that has eluded the country for over forty years.

Otto Addo’s first stint at the helm of the Black Stars saw him lead Ghana to the World Cup. Although it wasn’t all rosy, Otto showed glimpses of what he could achieve with the team.

However, just after the World Cup, Otto handed in his resignation letter and returned to Germany to continue his youth team duties with Borussia Dortmund.

Ghana had to look elsewhere for a coach as they continued their search for a savior. Then came ex-Brighton boss Chris Hughton. Hughton, part of Otto Addo’s technical team, succeeded the German-born Ghanaian as the head coach of Ghana.

Chris Hughton’s tenure was far from ideal, as Ghana suffered a group-stage elimination at the 2023 AFCON and he was fired moments after Ghana’s last game.

With Ghana again in need of a coach, Otto Addo was handed a second chance to lead the team.

His second tenure started on a perfect note. After Ghana suffered setbacks in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Otto Addo got the team firing again, winning his first two competitive games against Mali and the Central African Republic.

Then came the AFCON qualifiers, and Otto Addo found himself struggling as Ghana missed out on qualification. Calls for his sacking echoed throughout the country. Despite this failure, reports indicate the GFA is sticking with Otto Addo.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, November 27, met Otto Addo, to deliberate on the future of the former Black Stars midfielder.

As a result, here is a comprehensive analysis of why Ghana could reap future benefits from the GFA’s decision to retain him as head coach.

    Consistency and stability

Changing coaches frequently disrupts team dynamics and creates uncertainty. Sticking with Otto Addo would give Ghana’s players a chance to adapt to the vision of a single coach.

Since 2019, Ghana has had five different coaches. While Otto’s performance may not meet fans’ expectations, keeping him allows him to provide stability and give players the opportunity to adjust to his system. This continuity also gives Otto enough time to implement his ideas effectively.

    Long-term development

Coaching strategies often take time to yield results, especially in national teams that have limited preparation periods. Otto Addo’s extended stay could foster long-term development and growth.

With Ghana boasting a wealth of young talent, having one coach to guide their development could yield significant benefits in the future.

    Supporting Otto Addo’s growth

Fans may argue that the team should focus on results, but sticking with Otto could provide him the opportunity to learn from mistakes, refine his skills, and ultimately improve.

If Otto succeeds in bringing glory to Ghana as an indigenous coach. It could elevate his reputation internationally while benefiting the national team, ensuring the country reaps the rewards instead of other nations, as was the case with Kwasi Appiah.

    Buying time for rebuilding

Ghana is undeniably in a rebuilding phase, but frequent coaching changes have disrupted progress. Allowing Otto Addo to continue offers the time needed to develop young players and rebuild the team’s foundation.

With many senior players nearing the end of their careers, the GFA can also task Otto with constructing a team around a new generation of players.

    Contractual Obligations

The GFA already owes former coaches like CK Akonnor and Chris Hughton unpaid salaries after their dismissals. Keeping Otto Addo would save the association substantial costs.

Terminating Otto Addo’s contract would be expensive, and hiring a new coach would add to the financial burden. Sticking with Otto is the most cost-effective and practical solution for the GFA at this time.

It’s essential to acknowledge that AFCON qualification setbacks are not unprecedented in Ghana’s football history. The Black Stars have faced similar disappointments in the past (1972, 1974, 1986, 1994, and 2004) but have always bounced back stronger. Patience and continuity are vital in football, and Otto Addo deserves the opportunity to rectify the team’s shortcomings.
