Photos and videos of over forty (40) German heart specialists arriving in Ghana to perform surgeries on Ghanaian children swept across various social media platforms, with huge praises for the man who is the brain behind it all, former Schalke forward Gerald Asamoah.

The former German footballer, through his Gerald Asamoah Heart Foundation, has been undertaking these charity projects, with the 2024 edition being the second.

The surgeries are set to take place at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) due to the foundation’s partnership with UGMC’s Cardiothoracic Department.

The impressive and benevolent works of Gerald Asamoah and his foundation have prompted GhanaWeb to look at other players of Ghanaian descent who have embarked on charity projects in the country.

    Danny Welbeck

The English and Brighton and Hove Albion striker has built a school at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region to support education in the community.

Danny Welbeck and his family were supported by the St Andrew Church in Manchester, to establish the school in the Ashanti region.

During the COVID period, Welbeck also donated food items and protective equipment worth £10,000 to the community.

    Memphis Depay

The Dutch footballer of Ghanaian descent has been executing various charity projects in the country.

The former Barcelona forward is a dedicated supporter of the Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind and has been undertaking philanthropic works to help improve the school.

In 2022, Depay, who is Ghanaian through his father, refurbished the building of the school and equipped it with modern facilities.

    Marcel Desailly

Desailly is a World Cup winner with France and is fondly remembered for his spells at Chelsea, AC Milan, and a host of other European giants.

Desailly built the Lizzy’s Sports Complex, which was at some point a hub for training and talent nurturing in the country.

He has also undertaken a number of charity projects across the country.

    Eddie Nketiah

The former Arsenal forward is a philanthropist and has been supporting various colts football clubs when he visits.

The Nketiah Foundation, owned by the Crystal Palace forward, has been making annual donations to the Akropong School for the Blind.
