Blaze sparks evacuation of Westfield in Stratford: Smoke seen near first-floor Apple store in east London shopping centre – as 60 firefighters race to area

- Evacuations of customers is in progress with police also on the scene
Shoppers have been evacuated from an east London shopping centre after a fire broke out in one of the stores.
Around 40 firefighters and eight engines rushed to Westfield in Stratford this morning after reports of a blaze on the first floor.
Hundreds of customers raced to leave the centre which is near the Olympic Park as smoke filled the main concourse.

The situation has been described as ‘critical’, though it unclear how far the fire has spread.
One person tweeted a photo of smoke filling the main shopping hall near to the Apple store, adding: ‘That’s not a small fire.’
Another eyewitness reported an emergency services helicopter was also hovering overheard.

A Met Police spokesperson tweeted: ‘We are supporting LondonFire with evacuation of the #Westfield Shopping Centre in #Stratford following reports of a fire.’
It is not yet clear what caused the fire and a London Fire Brigade spokesman said there are no reports of any injuries.
The fire has since been brought under control, with the Fire Brigade saying there will be an investigation into the cause.
