The timely intervention of the Ghana Fire Service on Wednesday prevented fire from spreading to chains of stores at the Madina Zongo Junction in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality (LaNMMA), in the Greater Accra Region.

The fire started around 4.20 p.m. from a clothing shop on the ground floor of one of the story structure at the market.

It followed an explosion from within the shop which eyewitnesses believed might have been caused by the frequent power outages.

It took personnel of the Madina Fire Station just 20 minutes with support from the Adentan Fire Station to completely douse the fire.

Personnel of the Madina Divisional Police Command led by Chief Superintendent, Dr Sarah Aba-Aferi, and the District Commander Precious Agbewornu and City Guards of the assembly were at hand to maintain law and order.

According to them, the Zongo Junction area had been experiencing power outages with high and low current since Monday afternoon until it finally went off on Tuesday.

The Ghanaian Times observed that the fire personnel were swift and had to break through containership before they could attack the fire.

While some of the personnel were on the ground floor, others were on the top floor ensuring that the fire does not spread tothe other stores.

They later took inventory of the burnt items and handed them over to a brother of the shop owner before moving out with applause from onlookers who commended them for the prompt response.

Madam Rose Nkansah, who sells fruits close by the shop, commended the fire for personnel for the efforts in putting out the fire.

“I could not imagine that fire could be easily put out considering the plume of smoke the clothing materials were emitting and I commend the personnel and their commanders for the swift response,” she said.
