Fire has gutted part of the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region.

Preliminary investigations have shown that the fire started in one of the rooms on the first floor of a one-storey dormitory block and spread to six other rooms on the same floor.

The blaze destroyed the roof, ceiling, students’ personal effects, books, beds, and other belongings. Two fire extinguishers on the affected floor also exploded during the incident.

According to a press release issued by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Friday, firefighters from the Kukuom and Goaso Fire Stations managed to bring the raging fire under control after several hours.

The statement noted that the GNFS received a distress call at 7:12 a.m., and the Kukuom crew arrived at 7:30 a.m., while reinforcement from the Goaso Municipal Fire Station joined shortly after.

The joint team managed to contain the fire and subsequently extinguished it around 10:26 a.m. Firefighters, however, prevented the flames from spreading to the ground floor of the building, and no casualties were recorded.

The statement further indicated that investigations were ongoing to determine the actual cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Gabriel Adu Bonsu, and his team of officials have since visited the school to commiserate with the authorities.

The team presented relief items, including 50 mattresses, rubber buckets, and other essential supplies, to help alleviate the plight of the affected students.

Mr Bonsu commended the GNFS for their swift response in extinguishing the fire, which started in the early hours of the day.

He also assured the school of NADMO’s commitment to providing the necessary logistical support to help resettle the affected students.

The Principal of the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Mr Kwame Adinkra Amo, who received the items on behalf of the school, expressed gratitude to NADMO for coming to the school’s aid in their time of distress.

He assured that the items would be used for their intended purposes.
