The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has cautioned that recent comments by the General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, describing calls for a third presidential term for President John Dramani Mahama as “sycophancy,” could undermine unity within the party.

Koomson said the remarks were ill-advised and poorly delivered, warning that they risk deepening internal divisions at a time when cohesion is critical for the governing party.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, January 1, Koomson argued that there was nothing wrong with party supporters advocating for a third term for President Mahama.

He maintained that the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections was largely driven by President Mahama’s leadership and personal appeal.

His comments follow controversial remarks by Kwetey, who criticised party members calling for a third presidential term for President Mahama, describing such appeals as “pure sycophancy” and “boot-licking of the highest order.”

Addressing a gathering, the NDC General Secretary warned against what he termed a growing culture of excessive praise and unquestioning loyalty, suggesting that some individuals believe flattering party leaders is the only path to relevance or personal gain.

Reacting to those comments, Koomson questioned what alternative plans the party had in place should President Mahama decide not to contest again.

He said that, in his view—and in the view of many supporters—President Mahama remains the right leader to continue steering the country forward.

Koomson noted that Kwetey could have used his platform to urge calm and constructive dialogue on the sensitive issue of a third term, rather than making statements he described as inflammatory.

He stressed that many of those praising President Mahama are doing so based on his record and performance, not out of personal benefit.

He further stated that he personally has not benefited from President Mahama and therefore cannot be described as a sycophant, adding that his support is grounded in his assessment of the President’s leadership qualities and character.

According to the GFL Secretary General, the comments by the NDC General Secretary were inappropriate and risk creating unnecessary tension within the party.

He called on the NDC Council of Elders to intervene and put measures in place to prevent such public utterances, warning that they are not in the party’s best interest.

Koomson also praised President Mahama’s leadership style, describing him as non-vindictive and noting that his experience in office appears to have fostered growth and maturity.

He cited improvements in economic conditions, including fuel prices, claiming that current costs are lower than those under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He warned that if such internal disputes are not managed carefully, the NDC risks weakening itself and creating an opening for the opposition NPP to regain relevance.

Koomson concluded by reaffirming his support for calls for a third term for President John Dramani Mahama and urged Kwetey to refrain from further public commentary on the matter.
