The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured electricity consumers that any faulty meters will be replaced and customers who have overpaid will be compensated.

He gave the assurance during the commissioning of MBH Power Ghana’s new Energy Meters Manufacturing Unit in Tema.

Mr. Jinapor said government will first conduct a thorough investigation into complaints about rapid depletion of prepaid electricity credit.

According to him, if the probe confirms that some meters are faulty, they will be changed immediately.

“Once we conduct the investigation, assuming some meters are faulty, we have to replace them immediately because you must put the right meter,” he said.

He added that if it is established that customers have been overcharged, government will find a way to compensate them.

The Minister noted that it is too early to draw conclusions and appealed to the public to allow the investigation to proceed.

He said authorities are working together to ensure the matter is handled fairly.

Mr. Jinapor disclosed that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Energy Commission, the Ministry and its agencies are collaborating to get to the bottom of the issue.

Meanwhile, he has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to submit a report within seven days on the concerns about fast depletion of prepaid credit.

He assured consumers that the government will resolve the matter in a fair and impartial manner.
