A Ghana Premier League (GPL) match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC turned tragic when a clash between fans and players reportedly led to the death of a popular supporter, known as Pooley. The unfortunate incident occurred during a tense match in Nsoatre, leaving the football community in shock.

According to YEN, The game ended with Nsoatreman FC securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko. However, the aftermath overshadowed the result, as tensions between fans, players, and officials escalated into chaos. Videos circulating on social media captured bottles being hurled onto the pitch, prompting match officials to flee temporarily before returning to resume the game.

Reports indicate that Pooley lost his life after an alleged attack by fans during the altercation. The tragic loss has sparked outrage, with many questioning the security measures at such high-stakes games.

In a statement released after the incident, Asante Kotoko revealed that their properties were vandalized and some players sustained injuries. The club expressed their commitment to assisting authorities in investigating the incident. “We will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served,” the statement read.

The game itself was highly charged, with the league leaders dominating possession early on and creating multiple chances. Kotoko’s Kwame Opoku and Isaac Mintah came close to scoring, while Saaka Dauda missed a crucial opportunity for Nsoatreman. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the second half when Kotoko players Justice Blay and goalkeeper Mohammed Camara were shown red cards during the heated confrontation.

The Ghanaian football community has been left reeling from the incident, calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety of fans and players at league games. Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic event.

As the league continues, this heartbreaking incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for improved security and sportsmanship in Ghanaian football.
