The family of the late Black Stars great, Peter Lamptey, has officially informed the leadership of the Football Association of the passing of the celebrated former footballer.

Affectionately known as the “Goal Thief,” the family paid a courtesy call on President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and members of the Executive Council on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Football Association’s headquarters.

President Simeon-Okraku, on behalf of the Executive Council and the wider Ghana football fraternity, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and paid glowing tribute to the late legend, highlighting his immense contribution to Ghanaian football and his enduring legacy.

Executive Council member Nana Sarfo Oduro has been tasked to lead discussions with the family on behalf of the GFA, as preparations begin to accord the late Hearts of Oak icon a befitting burial.

Peter Lamptey, who also featured prominently for Accra Great Olympics, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Kaneshie Polyclinic.

During his illustrious career with Hearts of Oak, he formed a fearsome attacking partnership with some of Ghana’s finest footballers, including Mohammed Polo, Anas Seidu, Mama Acquah, and Robert Hammond.

At the international level, Lamptey represented Ghana at several major competitions, notably featuring at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

His remarkable career was crowned with five Ghana Premier League titles and three FA Cup triumphs. He also finished as the league’s top scorer in the 1973 season, further cementing his status as one of the most lethal forwards in Ghana’s football history.

The GFA and the football community continue to mourn the loss of a true icon whose exploits on the pitch remain etched in the nation’s sporting memory.
